Role Overview

The role of the PostgreSQL DBA is to automate, maintain, and provide Business-as-Usual (BAU) support for PostgreSQL environments, specifically those utilizing Crunchy. The engineer will ensure the security, availability, and performance of databases while supporting engineering teams with feature development and infrastructure automation, particularly within the context of core banking modernization.

 

Key Information

  • Position Reports to: PostgreSQL DBA
  • Primary Environment: Multi-cloud or hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, GCP)

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Database Maintenance & Support: Deliver BAU PostgreSQL support, maintain and optimize environments in adherence to SLAs, and ensure high availability, reliability, and disaster recovery readiness.
  • Automation & Infrastructure: Build and deploy cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure) using Ansible, design/maintain cloud environments, and develop automation tools for managing PostgreSQL databases.
  • Operational Tasks: Perform patching and upgrades of databases and clustering software (Patroni), manage backups (pgbackrest), and handle recovery.
  • Incident & Ticket Management: Administer support tickets, resolve repeated incidents, and resolve production problems to minimize outages.
  • Collaboration: Work in an agile environment (attending stand-ups, retros, etc.) and collaborate with Scrum Masters, asset designers, and data consulting teams.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Write support documentation for overnight processes and execute SQL queries for ad hoc reports.

 

Required Technical Skills

  • PostgreSQL: 5+ years of experience (above average), including expertise in administration, performance tuning, and concepts.
  • Clustering: Hands-on experience with clustered PostgreSQL databases, specifically Patroni.
  • Automation: Proficiency with Ansible for configuration management and automation.
  • Scripting: Well above average Bash Shell scripting and strong Unix/Linux skills.
  • Backups: Proficiency in PostgreSQL database backups using pgbackrest.

 

Good to have Skills

  • Crunchy PostgreSQL: Experience with Crunchy PostgreSQL and Crunchy Automation is considered a "huge bonus".
  • Innovative Solutions: Exposure to FOAK (First-Of-A-Kind) database solutions

 

Education Qualification

  • Bachelors/Master Degree is required
