Your work profile

We’re looking for a Senior Microsoft SQL Server DBA to operate, secure, and optimize enterprise SQL platforms running on a Software‑Defined Data Center (SDDC). You will own HA/DR, backup & recovery, performance tuning, capacity planning, and patching/upgrades for SQL Server instances and clusters running on VMware vSphere/vSAN/NSX‑T (and hybrid, as applicable). The role partners closely with app, infra, and security teams to deliver high availability, compliance, and cost‑efficient database services.

Key Responsibilities

Database Operations & Reliability

  • Administer SQL Server 2012/2016/2017/2019/2022 across standalone, clustered, and AG topologies.
  • Own HA/DR design and operations: Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI), Log Shipping, Replication (Transactional/Snapshot), and geo‑DR patterns.
  • Implement and validate backup & recovery (full/diff/log), point‑in‑time restore, and recovery runbooks using enterprise tools (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity) and native SQL backups.
  • Lead patching, CU/Service Pack rollouts, version/edition upgrades, migration planning (side‑by‑side, rolling upgrades), and decommissioning with data retention controls.

Performance Engineering

  • Proactively monitor and tune workloads, queries, indexes, and statistics; leverage Query Store, Extended Events, DMVs, execution plans, baseline metrics.
  • Implement smart indexing strategies (covering, filtered, columnstore), statistics management, and parameter sniffing mitigations.
  • Right‑size server/VM resources (vCPU, memory, storage IOPS/latency) and coordinate with SDDC teams for contention mitigation (NUMA, reservations, storage policy).

SDDC/Virtualization Alignment

  • Operate SQL workloads on VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter, align with vSAN/SAN/NAS storage policies (latency, throughput, RW patterns), and NSX‑T networking (segments, micro‑segmentation).
  • Participate in capacity planning (compute, memory, IOPS), placement policies (anti‑affinity for AG replicas), and change management with infra teams.
  • Support DR with SRM/HCX where applicable, and document RPO/RTO‑backed runbooks.

Security, Compliance & Governance

  • Implement TDE, backup encryption, row/column‑level security, Always Encrypted, TLS certs; manage Logins/Users/Roles, least privilege, and separation of duties.
  • Enforce auditing (SQL Audit, server‑level and DB‑level), data classification/retention policies, and compliance alignment (e.g., CIS, organizational baselines).
  • Remediate vulnerabilities (CVE tracking), secure endpoints, and maintain privileged access processes.

Data Services & Platform Integration

  • Support SSIS/SSRS/SSAS (as applicable), Linked Servers, Agent Jobs, Database Mail, and alerts.
  • Partner with app teams on schema design, deployment pipelines (CI/CD), and change reviews.
  • Contribute to automation using PowerShell (dbatools), T‑SQL, Ansible, or pipelines (Git, Azure DevOps/Jenkins/GitLab).

Observability & Operations Excellence

  • Implement and tune monitoring/alerting with tools like SQL Sentry/SentryOne, Redgate, Idera (SQL DM), SolarWinds DPA, SCOM, or Prometheus exporters + Grafana.
  • Maintain SOPs, runbooks, KBs, CMDB entries, and architecture/DR diagrams.
  • Provide L2/L3 support, lead incident/problem/change (ITIL) processes, drive RCAs and preventive actions, and participate in on‑call rotation.
  • 7–10 years hands‑on MS SQL Server administration in enterprise environments.

Key skills required:

  • HA/DR: Always On AGs, FCI, Log Shipping, Replication; DR drills and failover runbooks.
  • Performance tuning: Query tuning, indexing, statistics, wait analysis, baselining, Extended Events/Query Store.
  • Backup/Recovery: Strategy design, PITR, validation, restore testing; enterprise backup suites and native SQL.
  • Security: TDE, encryption in transit, auditing, RBAC, credential management, data masking/classification.
  • SDDC operations: Running SQL on VMware vSphere; storage/network considerations (vSAN/SAN/NAS, VLANs/segments, micro‑segmentation).
  • Automation & Scripting: PowerShell, T‑SQL; version control with Git.
  • Patching/Upgrades/Migrations with minimal downtime approaches.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and stakeholder communication skills; ITIL exposure.
  • Experience with Azure SQL (IaaS SQL on Azure, Azure SQL MI/DB) or hybrid connectivity.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes/Containers (running SQL on Windows/Linux containers where appropriate).
  • Exposure to DevOps for DB (schema drift detection, Redgate toolchain, automated deployments).
  • Knowledge of storage performance engineering (queue depth, IOPS/throughput, write‑log latency).
  • Certifications: Microsoft DP‑300 (Administering Relational Databases on Microsoft Azure), legacy MCSE: Data Management & Analytics, VMware VCP‑DCV, ITIL v3/4.
