Your work profile
We are migrating a portfolio of on-premise Java Spring Boot applications — many of which depend on on-prem Apache Kafka clusters for event streaming, and inter-service messaging — to Amazon Web Services. We need an experienced engineer who has done this end-to-end before: assessing applications, untangling on-prem dependencies, re-platforming to AWS-managed services where it makes sense (and lifting-and-shifting where it doesn't), cutting over with zero data loss, and leaving behind a clean, observable, cost-efficient footprint. You will own technical migration of multiple Spring Boot services from discovery through stabilization, partnering with the application teams who built them and the platform team that runs AWS.
Key skills required:
• 8+ years of experience developing production-grade backend applications using Java
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Spring Data, and Spring Security
• 5+ years of production experience with Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, topic design, partitioning, consumer groups, schema evolution, and Kafka operations
• 3+ years of hands-on experience delivering production workloads on AWS
• Proven experience owning end-to-end migration of multiple on-premise applications and Kafka workloads to AWS
• Strong experience with Java 17 / 21 and modern Java features, including records, pattern matching, virtual threads, and JVM performance tuning
• Strong experience with Spring Boot 3 / Spring Framework 6, including Jakarta EE migration and modernization of deprecated APIs
• Hands-on experience with Spring for Apache Kafka and/or Spring Cloud Stream, including Kafka listeners, error handling, retries, transactions, and transactional producers
• Strong experience with Amazon MSK / MSK Serverless or Confluent Cloud on AWS, including Kafka migration, replication, security, and consumer-group cutover
• Experience with Kafka migration tools and strategies such as MirrorMaker 2, MSK Replicator, or Confluent Replicator
• Strong knowledge of AWS services including EKS, ECS / Fargate, RDS / Aurora, S3, IAM, MSK, Secrets Manager, CloudWatch, KMS, Route 53, ALB / NLB, VPC, API Gateway, and related services
• Hands-on experience with Docker and containerization, including multi-stage builds and production-ready container images
• Experience deploying containerized Java applications on Amazon EKS, ECS Fargate, App Runner, or Lambda based on workload requirements
• Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using AWS CDK and/or Terraform
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI and/or GitHub Actions
• Experience with relational and NoSQL data migration using AWS DMS, RDS / Aurora, DocumentDB, or MongoDB Atlas
• Strong understanding of AWS security, IAM, encryption, secrets management, TLS, security groups, VPC Endpoints, PrivateLink, WAF, and GuardDuty
• Experience implementing observability using Micrometer, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, AWS X-Ray, Datadog, or Dynatrace
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot application, JVM, Kafka, network, and cloud performance issues
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across application, infrastructure, security, and platform teams
Preferred Qualifications
• Education - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, or AWS Advanced Networking – Specialty
• CKA, CKAD, or CKS certification
• Experience with hybrid cloud networking, including AWS Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, VPN, PrivateLink, and on-premise-to-AWS routing
• Experience with Confluent Schema Registry, Avro, and Protobuf, including schema compatibility checks and registry promotion
• Experience implementing exactly-once semantics, idempotent producers, transactional producers, and Kafka Streams
• Experience with Kafka performance tuning, including acks, linger.ms, batch.size, max.poll.records, enable.idempotence, and consumer rebalancing
• Experience with JVM diagnostics and performance engineering using thread dumps, heap analysis, JFR, async-profiler, G1, and ZGC
• Experience with GraalVM, Spring AOT, and native image optimization
• Experience with AWS Graviton-based workloads and cloud cost optimization
• Experience implementing database CDC, dual-write strategies, and the outbox pattern during phased application and Kafka migrations
