Job Description – Urban Planning
Role Overview
The position will support government and development-sector clients in planning and implementing urban development programmes, policies and infrastructure projects. The role requires a combination of technical urban-planning expertise, consulting capabilities and stakeholder-management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake urban and regional planning, spatial assessments and infrastructure gap analyses.
- Prepare city, urban and housing strategies and urban-sector policies.
- Support the design and implementation of urban infrastructure, housing, municipal finance and institutional-strengthening programmes.
- Conduct demographic, socio-economic, land-use and geospatial analyses using GIS and other planning tools.
- Undertake policy research, benchmarking, feasibility assessments and preparation of strategic recommendations.
- Prepare technical proposals, reports, presentations, concept notes and client deliverables.
- Coordinate with government departments, urban local bodies, development authorities, multilateral agencies and other stakeholders.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations, workshops and capacity-building programmes.
- Support project management, monitoring, data analysis and preparation of progress reports and dashboards.
- Contribute to business development through opportunity identification, proposal preparation and development of sector credentials.
- Guide junior team members and ensure timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning/Regional Planning/Infrastructure Planning or a related discipline.
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Civil Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- Membership of the Institute of Town Planners, India, or another relevant professional body would be advantageous.
Experience
- Approximately 6-9 years of relevant experience in urban planning, infrastructure advisory, government consulting or development-sector assignments.
- Experience working with Central or State Government departments, urban local bodies, development authorities or multilateral institutions is preferred.
- Prior experience in a consulting or professional-services organisation would be advantageous.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of urban policies, planning regulations, government programmes and institutional frameworks.
- Proficiency in GIS, spatial analysis, data interpretation and presentation tools.
- Strong analytical, report-writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to translate complex analyses into practical and implementable recommendations.
- Effective client, stakeholder and team-management capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deliver high-quality outputs within defined timelines.
- Willingness to travel and work at client locations, as required.
