Sr. Manager, Engineering

Job Summary:

The Senior Manager of Software Engineering – Rental & / or Digital Platforms is responsible for leading one or more engineering PODs delivering critical capabilities across Hertz’s core platforms. These platforms support both the end-to-end rental lifecycle (RAC) and customer-facing digital experiences, including mobile applications, booking journeys, and customer profile systems.

In this role, you will lead teams building and scaling systems that power reservations, pricing, fleet allocation, counter workflows, customer identity, and mobile experiences across global, multi-brand environments. You will operate in a high-scale, transaction-intensive ecosystem, ensuring systems are reliable, performant, and aligned to business needs.

You will partner closely with Product, Architecture, QA, and Operations teams to translate complex requirements into scalable, API-driven, and resilient engineering solutions. Your day will include overseeing sprint execution, reviewing architecture and code, resolving production issues, and driving engineering best practices across the team.

You will also play a key role in platform modernization, including moving legacy systems to cloud-native, microservices-based architectures, improving observability, and strengthening CI/CD pipelines.

A significant part of your time will be spent mentoring engineers and Tech Leads, guiding technical decisions, managing delivery risks, and ensuring alignment across multiple teams while balancing near-term commitments with long-term platform evolution.

Key Responsibilities:

·      Lead the design and development of scalable backend systems and microservices, defining architecture and selecting appropriate technologies.

·      Own the end-to-end delivery of software projects, from requirements through testing and deployment, coordinating multiple streams and ensuring timely completion.

·      Guide and mentor engineers, perform performance reviews, support career growth, and build high-performance teams.

·      Collaborate closely with product management, frontend, QA, DevOps and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions and deliver features end-to-end.

·      Champion best practices for code quality, security, performance and maintainability, including code reviews, testing standards and CI/CD integration.

·      Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in production environments, drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.

·      Participate in sprint planning, design discussions, and architectural decisions, balancing technical trade-offs for extensibility, reliability and scalability.

·      Manage project risks, dependencies and stakeholder communications, providing status updates and proactively addressing obstacles.

·      Define and enforce QA and testing standards; partner with QA leads to integrate automated and manual testing into the lifecycle.

·      Adopt and evangelize modern development methodologies (Agile/Scrum etc.), DevOps practices (CI/CD, containerization, cloud platforms) and emerging technologies (AI tools, mobile frameworks) when appropriate.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.

·      10+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of building complex, distributed systems.

·      Strong expertise in one or more languages (e.g. Java) and frameworks such as Spring, with deep understanding of the JDK/JVM and microservices patterns.

·      In-depth knowledge of API development (REST, SOAP, GraphQL), database design (SQL/NoSQL) and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).

·      Familiar with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes) and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).

·      Practical experience in QA/test automation, including frameworks like JUnit, Selenium, WebDriver, Cucumber and integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines.

·      Solid understanding of design patterns (SOLID, DDD, hexagonal), distributed architectures and performance tuning.

·      Excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills; ability to influence across teams and functions.

·      Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail and proactive risk management.

·      Experience working within Agile development methodologies and using tools such as JIRA.

Preferred Qualifications:

·      Master’s degree or MBA and relevant certifications.

·      Experience in mobile development (React Native, Swift, Kotlin) or other technology domains as required.

·      Familiarity with emerging AI/ML tools, low-code platforms and evolving technology landscapes.

·      Track record of managing distributed teams or working in a global development environment.
