Your work profile

A PostgreSQL Database Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, optimizing, and maintaining PostgreSQL databases that underpin mission-critical applications and services. This role ensures data integrity, high availability, security, and performance, while collaborating with platform engineers, SREs, and application developers.

Database Design & Architecture

• Design and implement robust, scalable database schemas and objects (tables, indexes, triggers, views, materialized views).
• Collaborate with platform architects and developers to align database architecture with business and application requirements.
• Leverage advanced PostgreSQL features (e.g., JSON/JSONB, window functions, partitioning, PostGIS, custom extensions).

Performance Optimization

• Monitor database performance using tools like pgAdmin, pg_stat_statements, and APM platforms (New Relic, Datadog).
• Optimize queries, indexing strategies, and resource utilization.
• Analyze query plans (EXPLAIN), identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements.

Maintenance & Automation

• Schedule and automate regular maintenance tasks (backups, indexing, vacuuming, defragmentation) using pg_cron, Ansible, or cloud automation tools.
• Implement database clustering and replication for high availability and disaster recovery.
• Manage upgrades, patching, and version control.

Security & Access Control

• Implement and monitor database security measures (role management, access control, encryption).
• Ensure compliance with enterprise data protection policies.
• Manage user access, permissions, and audit trails.

Backup & Recovery

• Configure and manage automated backups (pg_dump, point-in-time restore).
• Develop and test disaster recovery plans.
• Ensure backup integrity and timely restores.

Troubleshooting & Support

• Diagnose and resolve database-related issues in production and non-production environments.
• Provide guidance and support to development and SRE teams on database best practices.
• Document processes, configurations, and incident resolutions.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work closely with platform engineering, SRE, and application teams to support CI/CD and DevOps initiatives.
• Participate in architecture reviews, capacity planning, and performance testing.
• Stay current with PostgreSQL advancements and contribute to process improvements.

• Project Experience: Proven track record of supporting large-scale, high-availability PostgreSQL deployments, including cloud (Azure, AWS) and on-prem platforms.

Key skills required: 

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• Professional Experience: 5+ years in database administration, engineering, or development, with at least 3 years focused on PostgreSQL in enterprise environments.
• Advanced proficiency in PostgreSQL administration, configuration, and optimization.

• Strong SQL skills, including query writing, optimization, and data modeling.
• Experience with database monitoring, profiling, and performance tuning tools.
• Familiarity with automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, pg_cron).
• Knowledge of backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Experience with database security, role management, and access controls.
• Understanding of cloud database services (Azure Database for PostgreSQL, AWS RDS).
• Scripting skills (Python, Bash) for automation and tooling.
